Symphony No.1
Philosophical and Artistic Vision
Ashen Symphony No.1 is a 4 movements, deeply introspective and experimental symphonic work that serves as a sonic memoir of youth, rebellion, and transformation. Composed at the age of 24, it marks a pivotal moment in Ashen’s artistic and intellectual evolution, embodying the intersection of personal reflection, cultural identity, and orchestral exploration. The work traverses the liminal space between structure and chaos, nostalgia and futurism, forging a musical dialogue between past and present.
Rooted in a conductor’s vision of sound architecture, Ashen approaches orchestration not merely as a technique but as an inquiry into the nature of sound as a vessel for memory and emotion. The piece intricately weaves Western symphonic structures with Chinese pentatonic modalities, challenging conventional boundaries and redefining the symphonic form as a space for cross-cultural resonance. This symphony is not only an autobiographical reflection but also a bold philosophical inquiry into the essence of time, identity, and artistic defiance.
Musical Characteristics
• Fusion of Multiple Musical Elements – A unique combination of 1990s–2000s influences and Ashen’s original tonal and harmonic system, bridging nostalgia with innovation.
• Orchestral Experimentation – Showcasing his expertise as a conductor in orchestral tone shaping, dynamic control, and layered textures.
• A Tribute Through Cultural Fusion – During the composition of the second movement, both Stan Lee and Jin Yong passed away, which deeply influenced Ashen. In this movement, he integrates an eight-voice church-style fugue, using Western polyphonic techniques to pay tribute to Stan Lee, while simultaneously incorporating Chinese pentatonic modes within a Western symphonic framework, using Eastern melodies to honor Jin Yong. This creates a movement that uniquely blends Western and Eastern musical storytelling.
• A Symphonic Expression of Youth and Rebellion – The symphony encapsulates the energy, defiance, and introspection of growing up from ages 0 to 20, transforming these emotions into a vivid orchestral experience.
Ashen Symphony No.1 is not merely a composition—it is a philosophical discourse, a sonic time capsule, and a meditation on the inexorable flow of existence. Through this work, Yel-low Ashen interrogates the function of memory in sound, the intersection of cultural mythologies, and the evolving nature of artistic identity. In merging the rigor of classical counterpoint with the fluidity of Eastern tonality, he presents a symphony that transcends the boundaries of tradition, dissolving them into a larger, universal continuum of musical thought.
